We Built This City (on quality breakfast sandwiches)

Okay, so that title might be an exaggeration. Actually, more like a vision for the future. But it is true, we do have some tasty breakfast sandwich options here in the Flower City, and others that are gone but not forgotten.

RochesterFoodNet.com has professed that 2020 will be The Year of the Breakfast Sandwich, and they’re putting in the hours to round up key research findings and determine which Rochester establishment deserves the title of Best Breakfast Sandwich—shout out to the RochesterFoodNet team, the real MVPs here!

There are a few things (aka personal opinions) I should mention regarding breakfast sandwiches:

  1. I do not abbreviate the name. Never will my lips utter the words “breakfast sammie.”

  2. I prefer my breakfast sandwich on the go. My breakfast order at a sit down restaurant (diner) is reserved for omelets and potato pancakes.

  3. My favorite breakfast sandwich was from Hart’s Local Grocers, RIP. There is a happy ending here though. Last month, I asked my social media friends “Where have all the grab and go breakfast sandwich options gone?” The crew came through, and with multiple suggestions to try out the Tree Town Cafe. I highly recommend giving this one a go. Bonus, they serve their breakfast sandwich on Amazing Grains Salty Bread, and it’s fantastic.

Now I’ll get to my real point here. In my personal quest to find the right breakfast sandwich to meet my needs, I started making my own at home. All this requires is the right carrier carb, and for me, that is a fresh made English muffin. No preservatives, no freezer burn, fresh from the bakery.

My two favorite local English muffin purveyors are:

To create an at-home breakfast sandwich is really simple: 1) Use a fork to split the English Muffin apart (#NooksAndCrannies); 2) Toast the muffin (I use a cast iron skillet—in a kitchen decluttering rage a few years back I got rid of our toaster, and microwave); 3) Whip up soft scrambled eggs, a la Chris Morocco in the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen (don’t skimp on the butter); 4) Assemble and eat!

Fresh English Muffin + Soft Scrambled Eggs + Melty Cheese = Belasco Breakfast

So I guess this post was really all about the English Muffin.
